ACUTE EXPOSURE INFORMATION
- WITH POISONING/EXPOSURE
- INGESTION: May result in caustic injury to the mouth and gastrointestinal tract, as well as upper airway edema. In severe cases, ARDS, methemoglobinemia, hypotension, coagulopathy, hepatic necrosis, pancreatitis and acute renal failure may develop. Strictures and gastric outlet obstruction may develop as delayed complications after gastrointestinal burns.
- Chronic or subacute ingestion may result in neurologic effects similar to those seen with chronic manganese exposure (i.e., tremor, parkinsonism).
- INHALATION: Potassium permanganate may be irritating to the respiratory tract, causing chest tightness and coughing. Acute lung injury can result from higher exposures.
- OCULAR: Eye exposure can cause conjunctival discoloration and corneal and conjunctival burns.
- DERMAL: Skin contact with concentrated solutions may cause severe irritation and burns. Contact with dilute solutions can cause brown staining of the skin and hardening of the outer layer of the skin.
- VAGINAL: Use as an abortifacient may result in vaginal or cervical burns and erosions, with extensive bleeding, shock, severe scarring and miscarriage as possible complications.
